An unexpected beauty...

Speckled Woods (Pararge aegeria) aren’t our most obviously visually striking butterflies, although I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for them. Perhaps it’s a nostalgia thing, with their chocolate and cream colouring reminding me of the GWR livery of my childhood model railway. However, it wasn’t until yesterday, when this patient and trusting individual allowed me to approach near enough to take this close-up, that I became fully aware of their true splendour. I’m not sure I’ll ever look at a Speckled Wood in quite the same way again – my mind has been blown!
